
About Thomas F. Byars, MD
Dr. Byars grew up playing tennis and soccer, and was very involved in ALTA and Junior Tournaments all over the state. He was a Varsity Tennis Letterman for four years at Woodward Academy, and graduated summa cum laude in 1992. He attended the University of Virginia, majoring in biology, minoring in history, and was named an Echols Scholar during his freshman year. He attained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, and from there went on to complete his pediatric residency at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. After finishing a Chief Resident year, Dr. Byars pursued a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Center. While at Vanderbilt he worked with athletes of all ages, and served as team physician for several local high schools, Belmont University Men’s soccer and Men’s and Women’s basketball, and the Vanderbilt football squad.
In August 2007, Dr Byars returned to Atlanta to join Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates. He currently serves as a team physician for several area high schools and local events.
Dr. Byars brings a unique skill set to the practice as the first non-operative orthopedist/sports medicine specialist to join Pediatric Orthopaedic Associates. He is one of only about 100 physicians with residency training in pediatrics to complete a fellowship in sports medicine, and hold a Certificate of Added Qualification from the American Board of Pediatrics. He is an active member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, is a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of both the Georgia Chapter of the AAP and the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness of the AAP.
In his free time, Dr. Byars enjoys tennis, running and spending time with his wife and three children.
